Agar, 6 g, dehydrated

Item# CH-AGAR

In Stock

Add water to this agar powder and sterilize it if desired for a pure agar base (no nutrients added). This container makes about 200ml agar solution, enough to cover 15 standard 90-100mm petri dishes (not included).

Instructions:
Mix 1 level teaspoon of dehydrated agar with 100 ml (3/8 cup) of room-temperature water. Bring to a boil while stirring to ensure the agar is completely dissolved. Pour 10-12 ml hot agar in each petri dish, just covering the bottom. Replace the dish top immediately after pouring to prevent contamination. Let dishes stand 1 hour for agar to solidify. This recipe makes 100 ml of nutrient agar solution, enough to cover 7-9 standard 90-100mm petri dishes.

This agar can be sterilized in a pressure cooker before pouring into sterile plastic dishes. Use 15 lbs. pressure for 15 minutes.

This agar does not have nutrients added to it; however, since it's an organic substance (made from seaweed), it's a medium that encourages bacteria growth. You can mix a little chicken broth with the agar if you want to add more nutrients.

Many uses

Adkins is right that the pre-made solution is a better buy, but only if you need a general purpose petri dish filler (just keep it refrigerated or frozen). With dry agar you can make special media for fungi, etc. You can also make electrophoresis gels.

Dehydrated Agar
Reviewed By: Marcelle Adkins
I do not think that you should purchase the dehydrated agar. The pre-made agar is a much better purchase. I have purchased a few bottles of the pre-made agar before and they were fine. When you get this stuff, you do not get instructions to come with it. That's not a big deal as you can find them on the web. But, the stuff you have to mix makes less agar per dollar than the pre-made stuff so it ends up as more expensive!!! I bought this stuff assuming that I was being economical, but oz for oz, it's not a good buy. And you don't have to go to the trouble to make and sterilize the pre-made sterile stuff. Buy the pre-made stuff, for sure!!!!!!!

Agar Base

This agar nutrient is pretty useful, because you can create your own specific mediums by simply purchasing separate ingredients off of the website. Agar itself sometimes doesnt provide enough nutrients, but it can be prepared by itself. The only drawback to using this product, is the possibility of contaminating your agar. Check out other websites to find different agar medium requirements and which bacteria grow best on them. -Have fun!
