great for budding chemists

GREAT FLAME FOR CHEMISTRY EXPERIMENTS! REASONABLE PRICE TO BUY AND TO KEEP FUELED. GOT THIS FOR MY SON WITH THE CHEMISTRY GLASS SET AND THE WRING STAND,. WE USE THE BURNER FOR EVERYTHING AND ITS EASY FOR HIM TO USE., wE DO USE THE STAND FOR POWDER BASED WITH SMALL AMOUNTS OF LIQUID WORKS GREAT AND USE THE WRING STAND AND WIRE MESH FOR SETTING GLASS WEAR ON WITH LARGER VOLUMES OF LIQUIDwE GIVE IT 5 STARS IF USED PROPERLY. STAND IS STABLE IF USED WITH A BASE SMALLER THAN THE TOP OF THE STAND (STAND TOP IS 3x3 THRE WIRE MESS IS 5X5. HOPE YOU HAVE AS MUCH FUN AS WE ARE HAVING. FIRST EXPERIEMENT WAS HEATING HOT CHOCOLATE ON THE PATIO IN A BEAKER SETTING ON TOP OF THE STAND!!!!! mmmm GOOD.

Not what I expected

After reading the other reviews, I thought this product would be great. It was for my high school son's Chemistry class, and was recommended as a purchase with the Apologia Chemistry 1 set. The burner itself isn't bad. It works and is very easy to figure out. But I think either the stand is too small for the lamp, or the lamp is too large for the stand. The flame burns too high, and as there is no way to turn down the heat, the flame stays well above the level of the stand. We left it burning for several minutes to try to see if the flame would die down a bit, but this did not happen. It's alarming, to say the least, and burns things much quicker than we need for the experiments. As it just doesn't seem safe to me (although it possibly is in fact very safe with proper precautions) and was burning too high, we ended up using our stove-top. We have a gas stove, so this worked out fine, and I liked it better than this set up. It's too bad, but I felt it was a complete waste of my money. If I would have realized the inefficient way these two items go together, I would have used my money on a better lamp and stand, or chosen to not spend it at all. Bottom line, if you are using Apologia Chemistry, you may want to look at another option for a burner and stand. Or just use your stove-top.

Dont make my mistake

This product is excellent. But I made a big mistake.You can't buy 90-99% ethanol in Canada.So after months of searching,I finally used Methanol.It worked even better!
