AntWorks
The AntWorks "space-age habitat" isn't your typical ant farm! Instead of sand, AntWorks uses a unique nutrient gel based on a NASA experiment testing ants' ability to tunnel in microgravity. With this kit, you can watch ants up close as they chew their way through the see-through gel, creating fascinating tunnel designs.
All you need to do is add ants, by redeeming the included coupon or catching your own. The nutrient gel takes care of feeding and watering, making this a complete easy-to-care-for habitat that's great for all ages.
The clear acrylic habitat is 6.5" long x 6.0" tall x 1.25" deep. This kit includes a magnifying glass, high-power “extreme zoom lens”, tunnel starter tool, instructions, and a coupon for live harvester ants, redeemable in all US states except HI. We recommend Ants Alive, which offers fast delivery and boasts 20+ years of live ant distribution. (When you redeem the coupon there is an additional S&H charge starting at $5, with multiple options available.) No assembly required. The AntWorks gel is non-toxic. Ages 6 & up.
Antworks was chosen as one of the Best Inventions of 2005 by TIME magazine.

Shipping was super fast. Can't wait to get some ants in there! - Thursday, April 12, 2012 Great Product!Reviewed By: D. Flowers It is hard getting your gang to wait for the ordered ants to come, but, worth the wait! Those ants do dig from the moment you put them in the farm! We have had our ants for 5 days and they are still going strong and making some amazing tunnels. Has been a great project! - Monday, April 09, 2012 great!!!!!!!Reviewed By: Megseys It was great! We bought ants and the first day they started to dig it was so cool. After about 2 or 3 weeks they died and we got more ants from our back yard it was great! - Tuesday, February 21, 2012 Really neat!Reviewed By: Julie Huffman We purchased this kit for 7th grade science and the boys were so excited to get it in the mail. I had them go outside and collect their own ants, which can be tricky because you have to get ants from the same "family" or they will kill each other. Well, we did find that out the hard way, because eventually there was only one ant left alive because he had killed the others! I would definitely recommend ordering the ants they suggest to purchase. But one thing that is interesting to see is how they burie their dead down at the bottom...they had plans for everything! God's creatures, even the smallest, are amazingly designed! Thank you, Science Tools, for providing the tools we need to explore Science! Love it! - Monday, March 28, 2011 IngeniousReviewed By: Annelle We have had at least two of these ant farms. The first time, the ants were busy all the time. When they all died (which was a long time) we reordered some ants. The second group removed the dead ants from the first group, just like we had read that they would. The second group did not live as long, and because there were so many tunnels from the first group, I guess they didn't feel like they had as much to do or something because they really didn't do that much.
We ordered a brand new set last year. Again, the first group of ants were very, very busy making a very elaborate group of tunnels. They didn't live as long as we were hoping, but it was interesting while it lasted. We reordered ants again, and the second group that time was a flop. They died quickly without doing much of anything.
So, our first experience was with 5 stars, our latest was disappointing, so we'll call it a 4 overall. Give it a try! If the ants don't perform like you are expecting, try it again. In our experience, this is one of those activities where the results can be slightly unpredictable.

IT IS SO COOL BEING ABLE TO WATCH THE ANTS DIG AND MAKE THEIR TUNNELS IN THE GEL. IT IS SO NEAT. YOU COULD SPEND ALOT OF TIME JUST SITTING THERE WATCHING THEM WORK, IT IS AMAZING HOW FAST THEY DIG THE TUNNELS.AND THE BEST PART IS NOT HAVING TO FEED OR WATER THEM, IT IS ALL IN THE GEL! MY SON TOOK IT IN FOR SHOW AND SHARE FOR HIS CLASS AND THE TEACHER IS GOING TO PURCHASE ONE FOR THEIR CLASSROOM.I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMEND THIS PRODUCT TO ANYONE.
- Monday, August 10, 2009 not so great Reviewed By: elissa I bought this for my son and we were not impressed at all. The first few days were great watching the ants make their tunnels, but after that initial stage they just sat there and would not move. The only time we got them to move was by opening the lid and blowing in there. We have had a few other ant homes so I liked the idea of not having to feed them however the ant farms in the sand seem to keep more active for a longer period of time.
- Monday, March 30, 2009 A MUST BUY! Reviewed By: Johanna I highly recommend!
- Monday, January 05, 2009 AntWorks is Fun Reviewed By: Robbie We received the AntWorks for a birthday and loved it! It was great fun watching the ants dig. I will say it is only good for a one time use, maybe 2 times. Which makes it expensive. My children still talk about the antfarm! They have asked if we can get another one...
- Wednesday, April 09, 2008 Fun for the whole family! Reviewed By: Robin Martin We are a homeschooling family and we LOVED this product! The ant farm was so interesting that even my college-aged kids would come home and check on the ants' progress. The speed with which they created their tunnels truly was a marvel.
The LED light allowed us to really learn about the ants' lifestyle. We could see exactly where they chose to set up bathrooms and sleeping areas. And it was so amazing to us when they would carry their dead to the surface for us to remove.
We wholeheartedly recommend this product for any family!
- Tuesday, February 05, 2008 Antworks Reviewed By: Kristi Staneart I bought this for my 8 year old son for Christmas, along with the LED illuminator. It is the coolest thing, and very interesting too ! He uses it as a night light in his room, and has fun watching the progress the ants make. Its nice not having to worry about feeding them, since the nutrients are in the gel. Great toy for kids !!
- Monday, February 04, 2008 Great product Reviewed By: Deidre Webb My son has had dozens of ant farms. He's had varying degrees of success with them. Some, the sand leaked out, some were too wet, some too dry. Plus it's hard to know how much to feed ants. Ant works is so superior. There's no mess, and all the nutrients are in the gel. All you have to do is add ants and enjoy.
- Thursday, September 06, 2007 Totally worth it! Reviewed By: E. Lynch I bought this as a gift for my son and he absolutely loved it. (So did I!) Watching the ants start tunneling through the blue gel was the best part. Buy the light attachment to make this even better. My son used Antworks as a night light. The best ant farm on the market!
- Friday, June 01, 2007 Very cool Reviewed By: Teresa Derryberry I was very excited when it was at my door. Then the ants came we poked a hole in the gel and they started tunneling through the gel. It took a week for them to complete it. And they go up and down. very fun to watch. And the light made the ants look good in the gel. Great product.
- Saturday, January 06, 2007 Well worth the cost! This was one of the highlights of our Christmas. For once, something is as impressive in person as it looks in the picture. Ordering ants costs an additional three dollars, but it was well worth not having to go out and collect them. This is a beautiful ant house!
- Wednesday, July 19, 2006 Antworks Reviewed By: Amanda Schaner This kit was fun - the ants lasted for several months and I could watch the whole tunneling process up close. They were very easy to care for...I think the only thing I had to do was occasionally remove dead ants and let a little air into the habitat.
