Mechanical balances take a few seconds for the beam to stabilize each time you move a weight on the beam. Balances with 0.01 gram sensitivity are especially prone to this. They take more time to use as a result. A digital balance is a good alternative when you want a quicker measurement.

Excellent Balance ScaleReviewed By: Kim This quad beam balance was a great purchase for our home-schooling family. It was shipped to us promptly, very well packaged, and easy to set up and use. My ninth & fifth grade sons were both able to use it right away, and my second grade daughter has been able to experiment with it with very little help. I would highly recommend this to others who are looking for a reliable, accurate, sturdy, and easy to use balance for their school age children.

Sturdy, dependable scale This balance was extremely easy to set up and use. My high school-age daughter said the balance was just like the ones she used in school. She used it for several chemistry and physics experiments at home. My 9 year-old son thought it was so cool he demanded his own experiments. He used it easily with no problems or frustrations. I first thought he might get frustrated waiting for the beams to stop moving, but the dampening system on the scale kept that from being an issue.
The scale has many nice features. The beams are tiered so that you can easily read the weight- a nice feature. It has a dampening system that makes for faster measurements (as mentioned above). The construction feels sturdy. It measure up to 311g which has more than enough for our use. The sensitivity of 0.01 g was also more than adequate. Zeroing was no problem using the zero knob on the end of the beam. It can be used to measure specific gravity which is a nice feature that we haven't had the opportunity to use, but the instructions are very straightforward, so I anticipate no problems.
One thing this type of scale lacks is the ability to place a container on the scale and zero it out, so if you need to measure directly into a beaker or some other container, you would probably want a digital scale.
Overall, this is a sturdy, dependable, easy-to-use scale that should meet the demands of most home science use. We are extremely happy with it!
