Item# RM-GEODE

Break open a plain-looking rock to see if there are quartz crystals inside! You provide a hammer or rock pick and help for young kids. Geodes are formed when mineral deposits build up inside volcanic or sedimentary rock "bubbles." Typical size is 1.5" to 1.75".

Note: Although not every geode contains crystals, they are still fun to break open and have interesting mineral deposits inside.

Fun cracking open
Reviewed By: Stephanie
I was a little disapointed with the size of the geode. It seemed like a pretty small medium. The size however, did not distract from the fun of cracking it open. It would be fun to do it again.

Hidden treasure
Reviewed By: Matt
I bought several to use with a class (yes, they are "home science tools", but you buy them for a class too, especially if you're not really a science teacher). They came uniformly dirty, but closer examination suggests that the dirt is added for effect, because although the dirt is all identical, each geode is quite different in color on the outside and has different encrustations on it (suggesting varied origins). Upon washing them I discovered that most seem to have had a little whack already - just enough to chip off a piece to show that they do have some crystal inside (perhaps a quality control measure to be sure that most of them are actually worth opening). Due to this, two were already cracked enough to open with my bare hands. Both had crystals inside. One was particularly beautiful, with fine blue crystals in interesting formations. I'm waiting for the appropriate lesson to open the rest, but I'm dying of curiosity to see what other treasures I'll find.

Geeee! odes

It's fun to use tools to break something open and find something inside. True treasure-hunt! That said, I wish there was another price range for larger cavity stones which might have more dramatic crystal structures inside. It'd be worth it!

Worth taking a Whack at!
Reviewed By: Jessica Moody
I didn't use a hammer so it was pretty hard to whack it open, but once I did...How amazing it was to see something so beautiful! I felt like I struck gold! I am very excited to add such a beautiful rock to my ever growing collection. Not only was this a fun project but I learned alot too. I recommend everyone buy one of these, not hard to do at these prices and I KNOW you will be satisfied. Happy Whacking!
