Distillation lab guide

Conduct simple distillations using common, inexpensive equipment. Includes step-by-step instructions and recipes for mixtures to distill.

Required Lab Equipment

• Alcohol Lamp with a lamp stand or ring stand
• 250 ml Erlenmeyer flask or 500 ml boiling flask
• Rubber stopper to fit flask, 1 hole, #6-1/2 or 2 hole, #6-1/2
• Thermometer is optional; if you use it you’ll need a 2-hole stopper for the flask; otherwise use 1-hole
• Large test tube
• Rubber stopper to fit large test tube, 2 hole, #0
• 10 ml glass graduated cylinder
• 100 ml polypropylene or glass graduated cylinder
• 250 ml glass beaker
• 2-3 pieces of 3" glass tubing that fit stoppers
• Rubber or vinyl tubing
• Glycerin or Vaseline for inserting glass tubes
