More Information

Dogfish shark, 18-22", double injected

Item# PM-DOGFISH

NOTE: Dogfish shark specimens are globally in short supply, and we are not sure when we will have more consistently available -- likely not until late 2016 or beyond. Those few that we do receive in the mean time will be used to fill orders for the Shark Dissection Kit. We apologize for the inconvenience.

The vessels in this shark dissection specimen are double injected with red (arteries) and yellow (hepatic) latex. The dogfish shark species is Squalus acanthus.

Please note that the tail of shark specimens is partially cut through and folded over to facilitate injection and shipping.

Note: Specimens are initially preserved with a formaldehyde solution, the best animal tissue fixative. The formaldehyde is then displaced first with water and finally with a glycol solution to produce a moist, low-fume specimen which will not decay over time. Plan to use specimens within one year of purchase to ensure the best tissue quality. Specimen discoloration and dryness over time is normal and does not indicate decay.

Store your specimens at normal room temperature—refrigeration is not required. Storage in attics or garages at high temperatures will damage the specimens. Once opened, specimens can be resealed in a zip-lock bag to prevent them from drying out for later use.

Shark Review by
We have ordered many dissection specimens from HST and have been very pleased with them all. This one was not as impressive as others though. The shark was folded, so the back end was snapped and barely hanging on. It was small and shrunken and a little harder to get in to, but we were able to accomplish our learning needs. Still good quality, just not superb as our other HST specimens have been.
Great Co-op Specimen Review by
This was the coolest dissection this year! We ordered 1 fish per every 2 students for our co-op biology class and the work-load was perfectly divided for a specimen of this size. In the dissection, we removed each organ for a comparative organ lab from multiple specimens at a later date, within the intestines of one of the sharks was a perfectly preserved fish!!! The kids ( and me) loved it!!
Nice size Review by
I purchased 4 dogfish sharks for a comparative fish anatomy lab. The specimens were huge and in great shape. I would recommend a resealable bag.
Injection was helpful. Specimen was dried out/ Review by
I was disappointed in the quality of the dogfish.
The specimen was very dessicated, even though it was preserved with formalin & sealed: making the dissection
experience not as beneficial as others we have done with better specimens. I have ordered from a competitor before (Carolina) and though it was more expensive, the specimen was in much better condition. Shipping was fast.
Great for homeschool dissection Review by
Perfect for dissection! It was nice that they already cut it and the kids didn't have to do a lot of work on it.
