More Information

Dogfish shark, 18-22", double injected

Item# PM-DOGFISH

The vessels in this shark dissection specimen are double injected with red (arteries) and blue (veins) latex. The dogfish shark species is Squalus acanthus.

Please note that the tail of shark specimens is partially cut through and folded over to facilitate injection and shipping.

Note: Specimens are initially preserved with a formaldehyde solution, the best animal tissue fixative. The formaldehyde is then displaced first with water and finally with a glycol solution to produce a moist, low-fume specimen which will not decay over time. Plan to use specimens within one year of purchase to ensure the best tissue quality. Specimen discoloration and dryness over time is normal and does not indicate decay.

Store your specimens at normal room temperature—refrigeration is not required. Storage in attics or garages at high temperatures will damage the specimens. Once opened, specimens can be resealed in a zip-lock bag to prevent them from drying out for later use.

Great specimen but missing organs Review by
This is a GREAT specimen. It was easy to do and very well preserved. I only buy my specimens here because I have yet to find any that were unusable. The customer service here is impeccable, too! My issue is that the shark came with its gender organs removed! I am thinking from examining it that it was female, but there was no gender organs inside the shark and you could tell where the organs would've been attached. (There was a tube right where the uterus should've been with nothing attached to it.) I wish I had known from reading the description. It was disappointing to not be able to verify what the children thought it was, which was part of their assignment.
[HST says: Someone from customer service will contact you. The dogfish shark specimens should come fully intact, and we have a theory as to what may have occurred with yours. Thanks for the great feedback!]

Cool Review by
Deep down, I think we all want to dissect a shark. The size was pretty good, although the specimen was a little bit too dry. Overall, it's worth buying.
Great product Review by
Very thankful to be able to get quality specimens for our homeschool co-op. My students are getting an better quality education because of supplies such as Home Science Tools. Thank you!
Awesome Dissection! Review by
We thoroughly enjoyed working with these sharks. The size of the specimens were perfect for the size of class we have. We purchased 4 for our 10 students to share. The dying helped us identify parts much easier. A wonderful experience!
