Drosophila (Fruit Fly) Study Kit
Fruit flies provide a great opportunity to study life cycles and genetics. This kit includes a coupon for two fruit fly cultures with your choice of varieties (white, brown, eyeless, ebony, sepia, wrinkled, apterous, vestigial, wild, and others available). The live culture will contain fruit flies that are capable of reproducing. Eggs will reach adulthood in two weeks, and adult fruit flies may live up to eight weeks under optimal conditions.Because of its rapid life cycle, the fruit fly is the animal most commonly used in genetic studies of all sorts. Students can learn about genetic notation and phenotypes as well as experiment with monohybrid crosses, dihybrid crosses, and linkage groups. Vials for containing generations of fruit flies are included. You can also observe fruit flies under a microscope. Use the included FlyNap to anesthetize flies. Mail in the coupon for the fruit fly cultures at least three weeks in advance of when you need them delivered. Ages 14 & up.
