Typically you will receive your frog embryos 2-6 weeks after you mail the coupon. Severe cold or hot weather or limited supply may delay shipment for several additional weeks.

Frog Hatchery Deluxe Kit

Item# LM-FROGKIT

Observe frog metamorphosis up close with this deluxe frog hatchery kit! Learn about the lifecycle of a frog as you first watch tiny embryos develop into tadpoles and then the tadpoles grow legs and develop into frogs. This frog hatchery has an ideal habitat with a large, clear plastic tank that has a removable ventilated cover. This habitat is large enough to keep adult frogs in.

Everything is included: special food, magnifier, instructions for raising and caring for your frogs, and a fully pre-paid coupon for 6-10 live frog embryos (redeemable in the continental US, excluding Utah, Alaska, and Hawaii).

You may get either African water frog or leopard frog embryos when you redeem your coupon, depending on where you live and the time of year. (See details below.) African clawed frogs (species Xenopus laevis) live their life entirely in water. Their tadpoles have both gills and lungs so they can breathe in water or at the surface. Leopard frogs (species Rana pipiens) live entirely in water before maturing and live both in water and on land as adults. Their tadpoles have only gills to breathe in water. Adults of both species have only lungs and must come to the surface to breathe.

Development time: Metamorphosis from tadpole to young frog can take 6-12 weeks. Factors such as tadpole age upon arrival and water temperature, food, and other habitat conditions can affect their growth rate.

Guarantee: Nasco, the biological supplier of the frog embryos, guarantees that at least one tadpole will be alive and in good condition when it arrives. Due to conditions beyond our control, we cannot guarantee the life of the embryos or that they will grow into mature frogs.

Frog Hatchery Deluxe Kit

  • Fully pre-paid coupon for 6-10 live frog embryos redeemable in continental US except Utah, Alaska, and Hawaii
  • Detailed Home Science Tools instructions for raising and caring for your frogs
  • Special food to feed your frogs from embryo to tadpole to adult (enough for 4-6 months)
  • 3x hand magnifier to see your frog embryos grow and mature into adult frogs

Just waiting Review by
Once I received the kit I had to fill out a coupon to order the tadpoles. It didn't have a website listed to do it online or at least I didn't see one. And now we wait. It's been almost a month and I'm still just waiting with the tadpole kit set up and ready to go for that day that the tadpoles may show up. No communication. No tracking available. I don't understand how other reviewers were able to track a shipment. And now we're getting into the summer when it might be getting too hot for tadpoles to be shipped. That means our tadpole station is going to be set up until they feel like shipping them perhaps in September. This is not worth the headache.

[HST adds: we're sorry you're displeased with your experience. Summertime is a difficult time for tadpoles, as they won't survive extreme temperatures that occur throughout the country. We would recommend looking at the Bullfrog or Xenopus Laevis tadpoles that are available through our website. These tadpoles are shipped to arrive on a date you specify, but the cost for this assurance is higher than the cost of the tadpole coupon in the hatchery kit.]
Great item but disappointment with sub-company that ships the tadpoles. Review by
First I just have to say that the customer service here at HomeScienceTools is absolutely wonderful! We received our kit and then sent away for the tadpoles. The tadpoles arrived in a padded envelope. We immediately could see that the envelope had been opened and resealed by the post office which was due to the fact that the baggie inside that contained water and the tadpoles had broken and the entire envelope was wet. Not one tadpole survived. I was not angry that we didn't get to start the life cycle process but extremely angry that those poor tadpoles had to die that way. I called the customer service line with HomeScienceTools and the representative was extremely kind and helpful. We received new tadpoles from the sub-company within a week and they all survived. We now are watching TEN African Water Frogs grow and I have a feeling that we are going to need a larger tank! LOL All in all, very happy with this purchase-just upset that living creatures were shipped in such horrible conditions.
Nothing Froggy here Review by
This product is a great product that provides everything you need to grow, raise frogs from egg to tadpole to frog. Food, container, instructions (which are detailed and clear) and a coupon to have our eggs mailed to us.
Great product- please be aware of commitment Review by
We have been very pleased with this process. My children enjoyed learning about the life cycle of these frogs and are currently learning about the responsibilities of being pet owners. With that being said, I was not prepared for the level of commitment. After reading reviews, I was under the impression that we would be lucky if 1 or 2 frogs survived. We received 10 leopard frog eggs and out of those 7 hatched and developed in to full grown frogs. The entire family quickly grew fond of each of these frogs. They have distinctive spots and personalities and it is easy to tell each of the frogs apart. Because of this attachment we made the decision to keep all 7 frogs. This meant that we needed to purchase a 50gallon terrarium and other accessories for their habitat. They also eat LIVE food. Right now they eat 3 crickets each per day. Because of the cost, I purchase enough for 3 days ($7 per week) and then supplement with grubs from my compost bin for the other 4 days. I will be very happy when they are large enough to eat earthworms. The kids have already started a vermicomposting bin in preparation. We love all 7 of our frogs and are happy to have them, but I felt that I should provide the warning that it may be more successful than expected :)
What a concept! Review by
The kit itself arrived in excellent condition. My wife and I took a hike to a nearby pond, where we collected four tadpoles. Though we haven't yet ordered tadpoles from the coupon, we found that the kit works perfectly well for the ones we collected locally. They love the tadpole food supplied with the kit. Unfortunately, I received duplicate copies of clawed frog/tadpole care, and none for leopard frogs. However, this information is easily obtained online -- beware that the instructions are significantly different for the two species. All considered, still a five star rating.
