Heart, sheep
A sheep heart is similar in size to a human's; dissection shows the atriums, ventricles, aorta, valves, veins, and arteries. This is a plain preserved specimen of adult sheep heart. It can be used instead of a cow's heart. Note: Dissection specimens are initially preserved with a formaldehyde solution, the best animal tissue fixative. The formaldehyde is then displaced with water and then with a glycol solution to produce a moist, low-fume specimen which can be stored almost indefinitely. We recommend that you use specimens within one year of purchase to ensure the best tissue quality. Specimen discoloration over time is normal and does not indicate decay.
Store your specimens at normal room temperature - refrigeration is not required. Storage in attics or garages at high temperatures will damage the specimens. Once opened, specimens can be resealed in a Zip-lock bag to prevent them from drying out for later use.

Thanks for making my lesson so memorable - when will these kids (just in elementary school) get the chance to see a real heart again??? - Wednesday, February 08, 2012 Class dissection Reviewed By: Lezlie I ordered sheep hearts for my general science and a & p classes. My 7th graders loved the dissection and the speciment were in great shape. - Sunday, February 20, 2011 Okay overallReviewed By: Customer but not great - Wednesday, January 19, 2011 Class supplementReviewed By: Nancy I ordered separately the heart, brain, and a cow eye. They shipped quickly. Heart is a good size. The ventricles dissected nicely, but the atria were very stiff. There is a good youtube video showing a sheep heart dissection that was helpful. - Thursday, March 19, 2009 No problems - Quick delivery We ordered the hearts for a science fair project. We recieved them quickly and had no problems Read More Reviews - Thursday, March 19, 2009 Sheep Heart Reviewed By: W. Bales Hearts were all in good condition. Only negative is that the external blood vessels are cut off flush with the surface. I ordered 5 hearts and they provided an excellent dissection for 10 students. All were able to identify the major components of the external circulatory system despite the very short length. Just make sure they understand the anatomy before they start cutting. Great value.
- Tuesday, February 10, 2009 Nice overall-a few problems though I purchased 4 Human Anatomy dissection kits, which included the sheep heart, for a co-op class. Two of the four hearts were in excellent condition, but one of the remaining was cut in both atria, leaving a loose flap of tissue on one side, and a ragged looking atrium on the other. The fourth heart was smashed almost beyond recognition, though I was able to figure out which chambers were which after probing all the vessels and feeling the thickness of the walls of the ventricles. The valves were in good shape, and overall the specimens were adequate for our needs.
- Sunday, January 18, 2009 Basic foundational specimen Reviewed By: erin Specimens had everything one would basically need for an intro-to-dissection-activity. Aortas were cut pretty short, but not sure if that was the way they were supposed to be. Fatty layers around heart, made it into a "teachable moment" about visceral fat.
-Fast shipment. Overall specimens were in good quality.
- Tuesday, January 13, 2009 Awful. Diminished and Harmed Learning Experience The specimins lacked all external features - aorta, vena cava, pulminary, etc.; they were chopped to the muscle and since they were smashed in vacuum sealed pouches and very fatty, there was no way to discern front from back, right from left until they were cut into. But if you begin to cut in the wrong place, at the wrong angle, you destroy the dissection and are unable to view the compartments and valves. Very dissappointing product. The external features are absolutely necesary and these hearts lacked them entirely. Poor, poor.
- Saturday, December 06, 2008 Sheep heart Reviewed By: Raymond Gutierrez I have ordered 8 of these hearts over the past 2 years to use in my 4th grade classroom. They have all been in good condition with the valves intact. One had the aorta cut very short, but it was still usable for the students. I will continue to buy for my classroom. Shipping is very quick, they arrive 3 days after I order online.
- Thursday, March 06, 2008 Sheep heart dissection This was a great product and project for our homeschool heart unit. The dissection instructions were very good also.
- Friday, January 05, 2007 Heart, sheep I ordered this mammal heart to dissect with my 5th grade class. This specimen was missing the aorta, but over all was in really good shape. The specimen itself was firm and easy to dissect and was a great size. (This sheep was really healthy!!) I will be ordering more of these for my 7th grade co-op to dissect.
- Thursday, January 04, 2007 Sheep Heart Review Purchased 2 specimens in addition to the mammal heart dissection manual. One of the specimens was in perfect condition. The other one had torn valves but this was not a big deal - the valves could be seen.
