- Wednesday, February 22, 2012 Best affordable high school microscope Reviewed By: Lyn I buy supplies for a high school co-op biology class and have ordered two of these microscopes plus a more basic microscope over the last few years. (I also have two donated microscopes, one that is comparable to the 1000x and one basic. All of these microscopes are designed for high school.) The two Home 1000x microscopes are the best for seeing microscopic organisms in pond water or cells. When I ordered this last microscope, the co-op teacher told me to be sure and get the Home 1000x because the less expensive microscopes are too frustrating to use (though they work fine for prepared slides). Although Home Training Tools is my favorite science supplier, I did shop around online, but Home Training Tools had the best prices, plus the shipping is so fast. (I live in the same state and usually receive my orders within a day or two.)

When I first started to look for a quality home microscope I just googled the words and up came this website. How easy it would have been if I had simply made the purchase within that first 15 minutes! But alas, being the skeptic and thorough researcher that I was raised to be...it would take me another week and a half, many more websites, yellow pages and referrals to come full circle. After all my research the final question for me became WHICH microscope should I buy through this website? When I saw the sale this past month I had to go on and splurge and wow I am so glad I did! We have one good microscope a local vet had donated but this one is even better. I had class yesterday (Biology and Human Body) and the "Wows" made the purchase worth while. I know the kids will be wanting to look at whatever we are studying that week "under the microscope" (if we can!) each and every week. Its hard to decide which product to get when you want the best but are on limited budget. This one is it. The mechanical stage is wonderful, and allows you to precisely focus in on a targeted portion of the slide. The 1000x magnification puts it above and beyond the lesser microscopes. Its hard to dole out hundreds of dollars for a product of which you are unsure. I have absolutely no regrets and am very happy with this choice.

I was very pleasantly surprised to buy this at such an affordable price. Unlike most "play" microscopes, this scope allows kids to work with ordinary prepared slides from any biological supply house or make their own slides, so the range of slides available is very broad. I knew we wanted the mechanical stage (makes navigating on a slide MUCH easier), so the slightly higher cost compared to the next lower model was well worth it, for the addition of both 1000x and the mechanical stage. The cool light is also essential for viewing live specimens such as those taken from a pond (the university scopes I used in the past didn't have a cool light, and I remember having to work fast or risk cooking live specimens). We added the 1.3 megapixel camera, which allows multiple users to see things at once on a computer and also lets us project what we're seeing onto a classroom data projector. The kids are absolutely amazed. Very happy.

I was really impressed with this microscope. The magnification levels are great, and the optical lenses are pure quality. We put something large on the slide and accidentally broke the slide. I thought the lense would have been scratched, but that is when I noticed the lense was well-protected by the casing it is in. Great quality microscope.
