regeneration was memorable
Reviewed By: Kathy Ruiter
We used planaria at the 7th grade life science level. They are tiny, only 2-10mm long & 1-2mm wide. We kept them in bowls with our untreated well water, and they did fine. Bottled spring water should substitute OK. You have to change the water and transfer them one-at-a-time into a clean bowl every day, which got old after a couple weeks. That's the only reason I don't give them a "5". They eat cooked egg yolk every 5 days or so, which was an amazing, gross feeding frenzy. We "dissected" a few of them with razor blades to demonstrate regeneration, and within a couple weeks they had all regrown their missing parts. Unfortunately, the ones we shared with our friends all died within a week; one set by dehydration, but we're not sure why the other two sets died. I think you have to be pretty picky about not contaminating their containers with any soap. The booklet that comes with them was very thorough and helpful. So, if you can deal with the daily upkeep, they're a very memorable experiment demonstrating regeneration.
