It is made of optical glass, which has virtually no distortion, even at the edges. The handle does not unscrew, so there is no danger of a sharp point or the lense falling out. The whole magnifier is sturdy and well-made, so even small children can use it safely once the concept of "focus" is demonstrated to them.
