Owl Pellet

This owl pellet kit is great! The bone chart covers the different bones for: rodents, shrews, moles, and birds. Then there is a picture of a constructed skeleton so you can build it out of the bones you've found! There is also a worksheet and the forceps work good but you might need finer ones for the ribs and tiny bones. The probe is good for holding the pellet down. I was very satisfied, I only sent for one pellet and found three skulls inside!!! One shrew, one mouse, and one bird. I even found enough bones to build a skeleton! You'll have a great time dissecting your pellet!

Great for Groups

I ordered 10 of these for my co-op class on Anatomy when we were discussing the skeletal system. All kids of all ages thoroughly enjoyed this. It was easy to use and fun for everyone. The kids talked about the dissection project for the rest of the semester.

great project

This was a great project for us to do together to change things up a bit for science - especially in the middle of winter! My kids ages 10, 8, and 6 all got their own pellets to work on. (Though the 6 yr old refused to touch it until he saw how much fun the other kids were having and then he dug in too!) There were tons of bones in the pellets and the informational booklet was a great resource to use while disecting these. The tools that come with the pellets are perfect for working on these. We were slightly disappointed in that we couldn't put the animal back together by constructing the bones but kids that are older with more patience might be more inclined/ able to do so. I remember doing these when I was in middle school and loved it. Glad I could share the experience with my kids! We will do these again in the future....it is worth coming back to.

Too Cool!

I bought 25 of these for a group dissection and we had so much fun. We had kids ranging in 5 to 16 and everyone enjoyed it. I think the parents helping the little ones had more fun than anyone! Personally I can say that my (school aged) kids, who are 10 and 14, had so much fun and have asked if there are more things like this that I can get. We will definitely make this something that we offer every year to anyone who wants to do it. It was a great addition to our science books and gave the kids something fun to do at the end of the year. They were learning and didn't even know it! We are looking at your other kits now to see what we want to offer for next our next group activity.

Fabulous Owl Pellets

This was the most rewarding science activity we have done all school year! My children ranging in age from 4 - 13 all raved with "Ooo's" and "Ahh's". We worked outside in the the March Florida sunshine with two children per pellet and heard no arguing whatsoever. We ordered one kit plus two extra pellets. The kit was complete; the instructions were clearly explained; and the results were completely fascinating. Easy to use and top-quality. Thank you so much for the work you did ahead of time to make this a very positive learning experience! Yes, I will order many things from you in the future.

When it did, she sat right down and very carefully teased out all the individual bones. You would have thought she was digging for buried treasure, she was so excited when she found something new! She was able to reconstruct a more-or-less complete rodent (a rat?) from the bones, plus make a good guess about the origins of at least two other partial skeletons. I was impressed both with the prompt service and the quality of the materials we received. My daughter would love to do this again!  -  Monday, January 19, 2009 Great Motivator   I bought these a while back and didn't have any use in class. I gifted it to some of my students. Wow, what an effect it has had on them. The kits were very user friendly for all ages, and the kits were easy for me as a rookie teacher to assist and guide them into another world! I was put more at ease when I read that the pellets had been heat sterilized. That aspect should be stressed for the squeamish mothers and chilren out there. Some of the bones were so small they were easily broken and so reproducing the whole animal was more difficult than any of us had expected. My sons, ages 8 & 10, and I dissected 2 owl pellets (we ordered an extra owl pellet)and found a mouse in one and a shrew in the other. The tools, information sheets and pellets provided everything we needed to successfully complete our dissection (we provided paper plates and disposal gloves). This was a total hit. The young biologists were enthralled with the pellets. After a short hesitation they jumped in, finding 1-3 different animals in each pellet. One hour is definately not enough time to complete this kit throughly. After class, my boys and I finished the project by creating as complete a skeleton as possible of one of the animals from each of our pellets. The kit provides a bone skeleton sheet that is essential to the identification of bones.  -  Friday, January 05, 2007 owl pellet   This was a very nice kit. Williams  I purchased 23 of these kits and used them with a homeschool Science co-op class with ages 6 to 16. It was a big hit with all ages and the only week (out of 4) that the project was able to keep the attention of both the youngest and the oldest students at the same time. It was especially nice to see all the differing animal remains from so many pellets. The price made it easy to decide to get one per child, rather than one per every 2 or 3 children. I was glad I did as well, as many of the kids enjoyed it so much they took the remains home to show their parents. I hoped none had squeamish mothers ;o).
