We have definitely appreciated having both Fahrenheit and Celsius scales on this thermometer, because it helps convey the idea that scales are arbitrary (i.e. the same temperature in F is a different number in C). Overall this is an excellent and safe thermometer to learn with (no mercury). I have two cautions about these thermometers, though. First, because they are so long, you must use them in a container with a lot of weight at the bottom to keep them from tipping over the container. This is fine if you have a big beaker, but plastic cups or other disposable containers don't work well. This makes them somewhat less practical in a classroom than a lighter thermometer would be. Secondly, they come in very handy plastic tubes to protect the thermometer from breakage. Friction holds each thermometer in its tube. This is useful, but it means you need to use a pin (included) to get the thermometer out of the plastic tubes. This has been a problem for us. The first day we used a set of 10 of these in a 3rd grade classroom, two were broken - the first when the child was pulling it out of the tube and didn't keep the thermometer exactly aligned with the tube, and the second one when a child put the thermometer back into the tube at an angle that was slightly off. We now take the thermometers out of the tubes before we pass them out, but this means we must keep the thermometers until the point in an experiment where the kids need to use them and then we pass them out (rather than just leaving them in the supply boxes for each lab station). Overall these are very nice thermometers if breakage and tipping isn't a problem in your situation. They are easy to read and a great price. - Tuesday, November 04, 2008Great! This thermometer is just right for all of our activities -- easy to read, both scales together makes the temperatures meaningful for learning the metric system, a nice storage tube and an anti-roll ring helps us prevent damage. All this with Home Science Tools' wonderful service! Terrific! - Saturday, April 05, 2008Great Thermometer! I was really impressed with this thermometer. It is very easy to read.
